Beyond Difference: Interfaith Charter & Values
Our Purpose
Beyond Difference brings together people of faith, belief and non-religious conviction across the Chilterns and South Bucks.
We exist to:
- Promote mutual understanding and respect
- Build trust and lasting relationships
- Encourage dialogue across difference
- Work together for the common good
- Strengthen community harmony
We affirm the equal dignity and worth of every person, whether religious or non-religious.
Our Shared Principles
In line with national interfaith principles, we commit ourselves to:
1. Freedom of Belief and Expression
- Upholding every individual’s right, within the law, to hold, practise, change or express their religion, belief or non-religious worldview
- Defending freedom of conscience and mutual respect in public life
- Ensuring that people of no faith are equally welcomed and valued
2. Respect for Difference
- Recognising that religious and non-religious traditions hold deeply rooted convictions
- Respecting one another’s practices relating to worship, food, dress, lifestyle and ethical commitments
- Avoiding language or behaviour that demeans, stereotypes or misrepresents others
- Acknowledging that each of us may fall short of our own ideals
3. Honest and Constructive Dialogue
When we speak about matters of belief or philosophy, we commit to:
- Listening with openness as well as speaking with clarity
- Allowing individuals to define their own beliefs in their own terms
- Being truthful about our own convictions
- Engaging disagreement respectfully and without hostility
- Challenging misinformation or prejudice wherever we encounter it
- Ensuring that formal interfaith settings safeguard the dignity and integrity of all participants
4. Responsible Sharing of Beliefs
We recognise that sharing one’s beliefs can be a legitimate and valued part of many traditions and worldviews. Within Beyond Difference, this must always be characterised by:
- Respect for personal freedom and informed choice
- Sensitivity to context and vulnerability
- No coercion, manipulation, improper inducement, or misuse of power
- Acceptance of the right of others to disagree or decline further discussion
5. Peaceful Relationships
- Rejecting all forms of violence, intimidation or hatred and promoting a sense of security
- Working to prevent disagreement from escalating into conflict
- Drawing on the best of our traditions and values to foster reconciliation and understanding
6. Cooperation for the Common Good
We believe that people of faith and people of no faith can work side by side to strengthen our shared civic life.
We commit to:
- Building friendships across communities
- Supporting initiatives that promote justice, compassion and social wellbeing
- Addressing prejudice, discrimination and extremism wherever they arise
- Celebrating both our shared values and our distinct identities
Our Commitment
Living well together in a diverse society requires patience, humility and courage. Religion and belief including non-religious conviction can inspire great good, but can also evoke deep emotions.
At Beyond Difference, we choose to respond to difference not with suspicion, but with curiosity; not with hostility, but with respect; not with division, but with dialogue.
By acknowledging real differences while affirming shared human dignity, we seek to contribute to a more peaceful, just and harmonious community across the Chilterns and South Bucks.
